How To Dress for A Job Interview

How you look, and smell, makes a huge impression on potential employers. Here are some important tips to keep in mind on how to dress for a job interview. You should dress to your advantage, but make sure that you don’t overdo anything. Too much perfume can cause people’s allergies to act up and you don’t want the interviewer sneezing throughout your entire interview. DO NOT SMOKE before your interview (shower, go to the interview, and smoke when the interview is over). Smoke causes the same allergy problems as perfume, and it smells just as bad as if you haven’t showered or washed your clothes.

Have someone check you before you leave. They may notice things that you don’t.

Women:

Appropriate Attire:
• Modest and conservative
• Dark conservative suit (matching suit jacket)
• White shirt (not see-through)
• Nice closed toe or peep toe shoes (Heels should be between ½” and 3”)
• Knee-length suit skirt
• Nice suit pants (black or grey)
• Skin-tone stockings with skirts or dresses
• Socks that match pant color with pants
• Conservative jewelry, purse, etc.
• Simple makeup

Inappropriate Attire:
• NO bright colors, or colors that don’t match
• NO see-through shirts
• NO low-cut shirts
• NO heels greater than 3”

• NO strange-colored socks
• Do Not Wear lots of jewelry/ big gaudy jewelry/ loud jewelry
• NO gaudy/loud purses or keys

Men:

• Good hygiene – clean, shaven, well groomed
• Dark conservative suit (matching suit jacket)
• White or light blue shirt – long-sleeved tucked in
• Nice shoes – dark and polished (no tennis shoes)
• Nice suit pants (black or grey)
• Socks that match pant color
• Tie that matches attire (no clip on ties)
• Plain Dark matching belt

Inappropriate Attire:
• NO bright colors, or colors that don’t match
• NO see-through shirts
• Do Not Wear anything too tight to move/sit properly
• Do Not Wear anything so loose it falls off
• KEEP YOUR PANTS UP (use a matching belt)
• NO strange-colored socks
• Do Not Wear lots of jewelry/ big gaudy jewelry/ loud jewelry
• NO gaudy/loud keys
• Do Not Wear lots of cologne or strong cologne
• Do Not Wear your shirt un-tucked or with buttons undone
• NO dirty hands or fingernails (no nail polish)

Everything should be clean, ironed, and lint-free. If your suit has tacking stitches to hold vents closed (typically on the back and sleeves of the jacket) remove them. Remove any external tags and dangling threads as well.

If you dress like you’re already in the position, it’s easy to see you in that position. If you’re acting like you’re in the position, it’s even easier to see you in that position. This is not the day to skip deodorant, simple makeup, a clean shave, or deodorant. Yeah, I know… I said deodorant twice.

Dress the part. Look the part. Smell the part. Get the part!
